Game day

Game day ... I i should say show tonight. Looking forward to going out and playing some music. Starting look like a few people are coming along. Hopefully we can get a good size crowd. Have been running through my songs and a few covers over the last week or so daily. Should be a fun evening.

We'll see how it goes. Even have a new one almost ready to go. Might just bring it out and play it tonight.

First Gig

Well my first show of the year is soon coming up. I am looking forward to getting out and playing live.
It should be a good time 2 of the bands I will be playing with Showbiz and The Elzy Lay Band are friends.
Not sure how the night is going to go over all but I think it should be a lot of fun.

Will be heading to the studio to day to try and record a song or two. Heading to Two Bodies Of Water for a short session. Nice and close to home on the west end of Edmonton.
Should be a good day I think.
Still trying to figure out what songs I want to record though. Soo Soo many to chose from.

Up Coming Gigs

So I have Two shows coming up. The bookings are tentative at the moment but the dates are hopefully going to be April 7th and May 5th. Local shows so far. I will get a chance to up date this real quick with more detail.

But Thoughts on booking. I have never been the one in the past to go hunting for the shows. So it was a first time thing for me. I really don't like making cold calls like that. It makes me a bit uncomfortable just dialing a random number and person like that. I guess it will get easier as time goes one and the more I do it. But I am starting my data base of places and people to call for shows. One step at a time right.

Just random thoughts

So I have been tinkering away the last bit with a bunch of new songs. I seem to be on a small roll with writing. I've piled up about 5 or 6 more songs to do something with. We'll see what comes of them soon. I want to test run a few at open mic night.

I've also been thinking about things like CD's art work and T shirts.
Seems like those online printers want a lot for shirts. The bulk options are either way too many of one size or way to high in cost to really make anything from them.

Ah that good old say ... takes money to make money ... I know. Just finding the money to start with is the trick.

I've also started a spread sheet with venue names and addresses. Soon I will start adding in contact names and phone numbers. See if I can start finding some more opening slots and get playing.

Too many thoughts and not enough time or money.
Sure feels like a Monday.

Open Mic Nights

So I have been hitting the odd open mic night to get out and play.

Most nights it is a rather small crowd but, it is fun to get up there and play. There is always good feedback from other players there.
The other night there were not so many people there to play. so I got to rattle through a good number of songs. There was a group of a 5 people at one table they kept joking around that they wanted to "Hear some Skinnerd" . Well I tried to play a Neil Young song ... Hey Hey My My ... well it went over well with them. That was the first time I've ever had a bunch get right into singing it with me and that was a lot of fun.

After I was done for a bit and stopped to have a few hot wings and a drink, the group that was singing along stopped at my table as they headed out and all of them said thank you and that I did a great job.
That felt awesome to hear. Usually you get the other musicians feed back but to have others give you a right on like that makes you want to smile for the rest of the night.

I am glad I decided to try it out and see if I could do it on my own somewhat.
Plus it's good practice of my own songs.

Reading Materials

So on my other blog I have started up a review of some of the books I have been reading about music and related items. Some of these books have great advice and very practical information any artist getting started can use. Some of the books are Made to stick, The complete singer-songwriter, 6 steps to songwriting success, the indie band bible and a hand full of others. I hope to share some of the ideas i have come up with from these and from other things I have read along the way as well as cover some of the ones that worked for me and some that didn't.

I will soon be sharing some of my ups and downs along the way.

One of the ups as of late was jumping in and recording a little bit with an old friend of mine. He was test running some new gear he had gotten and needed someone to be a test run. For a few hours we tinkered and recorded one of my songs. I was amazed at the sound we got out from that afternoon. Its not a complete recording as we did not get a drum track but, over all for both of us good practice.

What I am Doing

So I have been thinking hard on what I am going to do with this blog. Some days I'm not sure what socks to put on but I do have an idea. My plan for this is to let you follow along with what I have been up to with trying to get something going with my music. Things I will fill you in on are shows/gigs, recording, when I have a CD ready, and what ever else happens along the way. I might even start up a list of Fan Photos from shows, and many other ideas yet to be thought up.

So I am hoping you will follow me and join in on things as I roll along.

I'm sure it will be an exciting adventure I hope you will join and enjoy.
